You’re looking for something new

After all, it’s your home. If you don’t like the look of your home’s windows then replace them.

Your energy bill has skyrocketed

Older homes that have single-pane windows lack proper insulation, causing your air conditioning or heating to work harder. To save money and keep those drafts from coming in, opt for double or triple-pane windows.

“If you notice air coming in from the seams of your windows, it is a good indicator that you’re wasting a lot of energy on regulating the temperature in your home, only for it to be lost,” said Larry Greene, president of Case Design/Remodeling in Indianapolis. “If this is happening, it is a sign that it’s time to consider replacement. Not only will you have better insulation, you’ll also get more noise insulation as well.”

There’s visible damage: Cracks, rotting or water stains on or around the window.

You want peace and quiet: If your windows are closed but you’re still hearing outside noise, they’re not providing the acoustic insulation you’re seeking.

Opening and closing them is difficult: This can be caused by many things, including the buildup of dirt, dust and debris, a spring that is too tight or a problem with the roller system.

If your door is outdated or has visible dings and dents, consider upgrading to new fiberglass or steel that not only looks good but increases your home’s ROI.

Replace your front door if you need to place a towel under it to keep the cold air from coming in.

It’s hard to open and shut

You need a reliable door that doesn’t stick when you try to open or close it.

It’s weathered or cracked

The last thing you want is for outside elements to enter your home.

You don’t feel safe

If you don’t feel safe in your own home, invest in a stronger door that is more resistant to forced entry.

“If your door is older and somewhat dilapidated, you may want to consider a new door for security reasons,” said Phil Eby, president and owner of Eby Exteriors. Older, flimsy doors can often be kicked in or pried open rather easily. Deadbolts can be added, but if the frame is cheap and the door structure isn’t very solid the deadbolt won’t do too much.”
