4 Easy Snow Day Projects

4 Simple Home Improvement Projects to Do on Your Next Snow Day

Snowy days don’t mean you should spend the whole time sitting on your couch. Turn your snow day into a go day with these four home improvement project ideas:

Paint

Painting a room can be a long, tedious job – which is why a snow day is the perfect excuse to get it done. Just make sure to gather your supplies a day or two ahead of time, unless you already have extra unopened paint cans lying around.

Create

The internet is full of DIY craft ideas. A quick search on Google or Pinterest can easily keep you occupied for an entire snow day, if not several. Turn that antique in the attic into a decorative masterpiece, or upcycle a piece of junk into something useful. The possibilities are endless.

Clean

If you are going to be stuck inside for the entire day, don’t you at least want to be stuck somewhere clean? Clean the bathroom, under you bed, the hallway closet, or dust and vacuum the house like you have been meaning to do for the past two months.

Organize

There’s a fine line between cleaning and organizing, but you can’t go wrong with either when you are snowed in. We all have that one junk drawer that could stand to be straightened out, or maybe you suddenly need a map to find the food in your refrigerator. Whatever it is that you want to organize, pick it and get going!
If you have any upcoming projects that you think will generate a lot of garbage, Waste Solutions 123 can help! We offer a variety of dumpster rental sizes and service nation wide! Instead of making a new project out of disposing your garbage, call us! We’ll deliver you the perfect size dumpster rental and handle the mess of disposing it, so you don’t have to.

Re-Shingling Your Roof

Spring will soon approach, spring of course is a popular season for home improvement projects. One of the top things that homeowners do during this time of the year is replace their roof. Harsh winter conditions can their toll on your shingles, and it is a good idea to replace them before the spring showers hit.
If you are planning on re-shingling your roof, these three decisions should be at the top of your priority list:
  1. Determine what type of shingle you will use.
  2. Find a qualified contractor to get the job done, unless you plan on doing it yourself.
  3. Figure out how you are going to dispose of your old shingles.
If you are re-roofing your home by yourself, one of the biggest challenges you will face is getting rid of your old shingles. Even if you hire a contractor, you will want to clarify who is responsible for this part of the job. Weighing up to 400 pounds per square foot, shingles are very heavy and will likely require professional help to dispose of. When thinking of how you or your contractor is going to dispose of the old shingles, give us at Waste Solutions 123 a call. We can provide you and or your contractor with a dumpster rental, perfect for handling the disposal of your old shingles.
Renting a dumpster is the best option for getting rid of your shingles, and renting a dumpster from the experts at Waste Solutions 123 will always be your best bet. In order to avoid overloading it, it is important that you get a container that is properly sized to accommodate your home’s roof. Let our sales representatives know how big your roofing job is and approximately how many square feet of material is going to be thrown out, from there they can better assist you in finding the best size for your job.
Here are the dumpster sizes that we recommend for two of the most popular shingle types, 3-tab and architectural.

3-Tab Shingles

  • 20 square of shingles – 10 yard dumpster
  • 40 square of shingles – 20 yard dumpster
  • 60 square of shingles – 30 yard dumpster

Architectural Shingles

  • 20 square of shingles – 20 yard dumpster
  • 40 square of shingles – 30 yard dumpster
  • 60 square of shingles – 40 yard dumpster
If you are ready to start re-shingling your home but don’t know how to get rid of your old material, call us today at Waste Solutions 123 to help get you started! Don’t worry about handling the mess, our dumpsters are perfect for any size job you have.

Renting a Dumpster or Hauling It Alone?

What Should You Do?

If you’re planning on doing some interior demolition, and you’re curious how to get rid of all the debris that will inevitably pile up, or if you plan on doing a medium to large interior demolition project – like remodeling a bathroom, kitchen, or other area of your home – one of the best ways to get rid of the debris is by renting a roll off container with Waste Solutions 123!

Don’t use a small trailer unless it’s a very small project.

8 or 10 yard trailers are common among small, local demolition companies, and they can come in handy for small debris removal jobs. But for those projects that produce more than 8 yards worth of debris, like most interior demolition projects do, renting a dumpster is almost always the more cost-efficient and convenient option.

Here’s why…

  • It’s quite common to underestimate the amount of debris a particular project will generate. This mistake can rack up the cost of debris disposal quite quickly. When you hire a company to perform the debris removal with a trailer (let’s say they quote you $200), you are signing up to pay $200 per haul, which means if it takes multiple hauls to the landfill to complete the debris removal, you’re paying $200 for each trip, on top of the disposal fees.
  • This is not how dumpster rental works. You can opt for the larger container, say a 20 or 30 yarder, rather than a 10 yard trailer, and most likely you will get the disposal finished in one shot. You pay one price and it includes the cost of the dumpster, mileage, and disposal. The key is always over-estimating the amount of debris you think will be generated during a renovation or demolition project. It will ensure you don’t incur overage charges or require multiple trips to the landfill.

There are several dumpster sizes to choose from, and each size has a specific weight limit / a weight that is included in the price, that may vary.
The dumpster you rent must be big enough to hold the debris from your demo project, and it must also include a weight limit high enough to accommodate your debris in the smallest number of trips possible.

Here are few of the most common interior demolition projects to determine the dumpster size that is typically the best choice…

Bathroom remodels

If you’re doing a small ½-bath remodel, you can get away with using a 10-yard container for the debris. However, for larger bathroom remodels, a 20-yard container is the smarter option.

Kitchen remodels

For a small kitchen remodel, you will likely be able to use a 20-yard dumpster without going over the weight limit, but for a large kitchen remodel, you will certainly need a 30-yard container, if not a 40-yarder.

Medium to large home remodels

For general home remodels that involve demolishing medium to large amounts of the home’s interior, you will likely want to go with a 30 or 40 yard dumpster.

When it comes to demolition debris disposal, oftentimes the bigger dumpster is the better choice.

When in doubt, it is always wise to rent a dumpster one size bigger than you think you’ll need. Not only does that debris add up fast, but dumpsters also have a way of making you want to throw out other junk that you’ve been meaning to toss over the years.
Of course a 40-yard dumpster will cost more to rent than a 20-yard dumpster, but it may save you money in the long run. That way you’ll be able to get rid of all the debris in a single trip to the landfill. The cost of fueling a roll-off truck is steep, so minimizing the amount of trips to the landfill can save the dumpster company money, and those savings are passed onto you.

Selecting a Dumpster Drop Off Location

Dumpster Rental comes with more than just the act of paying for the service. There is also the task of deciding where to place the dumpster as selecting a location is an important part of the process.

Determine What Size

The first thing to consider is how big of a dumpster you are renting, whether it be 10, 20, 30 or 40-cubic yards. Make sure there is enough room to actually place the dumpster in that location. Also, keep in mind that the delivery truck must be able to drive in and actually drop off the dumpster. It is a good idea to double up the dumpster sizes to ensure adequate space.
Some spaces can be a bit precarious as dumpsters can damage lawns or driveways. If you absolutely need to place a dumpster in one of those spots, it is a good idea to place wooden planks on the ground for protection.

Secure Location

Next comes securing the drop-off location to make sure it is safe. That means making sure there are no low wires or hanging branches, or debris that could get in the way. Additionally, make sure there is nothing blocking the delivery area, such as cars or other types of obstructions.
It is also important to consider the work area when renting a dumpster. If you are doing work in your backyard, you probably will not want the delivery truck driving across your lawn. Look at the area where you will be working and pick an accessible spot for the dumpster to be dropped.
You will want to make it a point to know where your property line is so that you do not wind up placing the dumpster on a surface that does not belong to you. That could become a costly mistake if something goes wrong.

Check for Permits

In the event that you are looking to place your dumpster rental in the street, check to see if your city or township requires a permit. Many municipalities have strict rules on dumpster rental service. Your dumpster rental company should be able to enlighten you as to when a permit is required.
If you need further assistance with your dumpster rental process, need advice on selecting a proper drop off location, or have any other questions or concerns, feel free to call us at Waste Solutions 123! Our customer service team will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding your dumpster rental!

10 Things You Should Know Before Remodeling Your Home

Planning a home remodel can be a difficult process, but going into it with these tips will greatly reduce some of that stress a home remodel may bring you. Here at Waste Solutions 123, we have provided thousands of dumpsters to homeowners who are preparing for a home remodel. In that process, we’ve learned a couple of things that we believe our customers should know before they start remodeling their homes. Whether you plan on remodeling your home by yourself or hiring a contractor, these are some things you should definitely know going in.
  1. What You Want

It is important to have somewhat of a clear idea as to what you want before starting a home remodel. Take your time and really think about what you’ve always wanted to have and what is feasible to achieve. If you are hiring a contractor, talk out your ideas with them because they can help you make what you’re thinking into something that makes sense.
  2.  Dimensions of Every Room

Before you can decide what you want in your rooms, you need to know how much room you have to work with. If you don’t have the blueprint to your room, do the measuring yourself with a tape measure and remember to write everything down because you will forget. Whether you are hiring a contractor or doing it yourself, knowing the dimensions of your house is very important.
  3. Your Budget

Deciding on a budget is one of the first steps in remodeling your home. Be sure to calculate everything into your budget such as the materials, waste removal, labor, and so on and so forth. Your contractor should be able to help you come up with an estimated cost for your project, but you should know what you are willing to spend before meeting with them.
  4. Your Time Frame

Having a loose time frame for when you want to start your project and when you want to finish it, is good for your mind. Some people may enjoy things more when they know when the project will be finished. It doesn’t really matter in the long run if you stick to your time frame or not, but it is a good way to relax your brain if you are worrying about when everything will be done.
  5. Where You’ll Stay

If you are planning a major home remodel, you may need to consider where you’ll stay if you cannot stay in your home during the construction. It may be possible to stay in your house during the construction but you might need to relocate to a different area of your home. This is something you’ll need to figure out before you start your home remodel.
  6. How You’ll Get Rid of the Waste

Home remodeling and renting a dumpster go hand-in-hand. Waste Solutions 123 is a nation wide dumpster rental company, we’ve provide our customers who are remodeling their homes with dumpsters through out the nation. Far too often, people start a home remodeling project and later realize they have nowhere to put all their waste. So before you start to freak out about where you’ll dispose of all your unwanted materials call the experts at Waste Solutions 123!
  7. Types of Materials

Your budget will greatly depend upon what types of materials you plan to use during your home remodel. If you are not remodeling your home yourself, you should ask your contractor what options you have when it comes to the materials being used. There are usually different options for materials that can either decrease or increase the overall price of your home remodel.
  8. Their Credentials

This is something you’ll only need to know if you are hiring a contractor or home remodeling expert. I would ask them how many years of experience they have, if they have pictures or a portfolio of their previous projects, and I would always do my own research. Never hire a contractor that you can’t trust because they will be in and out of your house on a daily basis and you should trust them to take care of your property.
  9. Is it Energy Efficient

If you are expecting to have a home remodel that effects your home’s energy efficiency, you will want to work this into your monthly budget. You should consider how you can save on energy usage by either installing solar panels or energy efficient light bulbs. Before you make any major home remodel involving the electricity or water service, make sure you consider your monthly bills first.
  10. Who to Call

When you are remodeling a home by yourself, there are many different things that can go wrong, it is a good idea to know who you’re going to call in case of an emergency. It can’t hurt to have a few people’s numbers on hand in case you break something that could potentially be harmful. We suggest knowing the number for a reliable plumber, electrician, and contractor in your area.
Deciding to take on an entire home remodel is a big commitment and we want you to go into it with the most knowledge possible. No matter where you are on your path to a home remodel, these 10 tips should help you make the best decisions.

Do not put Hazardous Materials in Your Dumpster

Will I Be Charged if I Put Hazardous Materials into the Dumpster?

Hazardous Materials in Your Dumpster

Unfortunately, if you place hazardous materials into a roll off dumpster you will be charged a special hazardous materials disposal fee. Hazardous materials are extremely dangerous to our health and to the environment. Hazardous materials include but are not limited to hazardous chemicals like;
  • Fuel
  • Household appliances containing chlorofluorocarbon
  • Propane tanks
  • Radioactive waste
  • Explosives
There are special guidelines to dispose of such waste. Due to these special guidelines in ridding of this waste, a cost comes with this particular issue. As it has always been, and will always be our mission to provide you with the easiest transaction in dumpster rental, we simply cannot avoid charging an extra fee for disposal of hazardous materials.
We serve as firefighters and along with fighting fires we also see our fair share of hazardous materials incidents. These include everything from fuel leaks to radioactive exposures, so we have seen first-hand what happens when a hazardous material is mishandled. One thing that we have certainly learned from responding to these incidents is that the clean-up is extremely expensive. It usually involves bringing in a specialized contracting company with specialty training to clean up the hazardous materials mess.
The same concept applies in ridding of hazardous materials waste with regards to dumpsters. If a hazardous material is found in a dumpster, it could potentially require a specialized team of individuals to properly dispose of the waste. As you may have guessed, these specialized teams normally come at a significant cost; a cost monetarily speaking and a cost to our environment from the exposure. These types of costs are what could potentially land you (the customer) on the hook to pay the bill for the proper clean up and disposal of this waste. In closing, it’s best to leave the hazardous materials clean-up to the professionals and allow our dumpsters to take the rest.

Do I Have to Be There When the Dumpster is Delivered?

Your Dumpster Delivery

Not necessarily, let us explain. One of the best aspects of renting a roll off container with Waste Solutions 123 is the seamless transition between ordering your dumpster and our driver delivering it to your house. When you call or receive a call about ordering your dumpster, a work order is created. Within the work order, there is an area for notes that pertain to your particular transaction.
After having reserved your dumpster with a credit card by speaking with one of our office managers, you simply tell them EXACTLY where you would like your roll off container placed, and they put that information into your work order for our driver. This allows our professional drivers to know precisely what your expectations are with regards to placement of your roll off container.
Once the driver arrives, he or she will stop short of your residence or job site and physically get out of the truck and survey the area. The driver will then ensure the area desired for drop off is solid, safe, and free of obstructions. After this is complete, he or she will then place two boards parallel with each other to place the rear wheels of the roll off container on. This prevents any abrasive damage to the surface we place the container on to prevent your property from any destruction.
The driver will then back the truck up and drop the rear wheels of the dumpster onto the parallel boards he/she initially placed on the ground. Upon the rear wheels contacting the ground, the driver will lower the front of the roll off container to about 1 foot off the ground and the place two more boards onto the surface. Much like the boards in the rear, these boards also prevent any abrasive damage to the surface we place the dumpster on. Once the front boards are in place, the driver then gently lowers the front of the dumpster onto the ground. At this point the entire roll off container is on the ground but is not in contact with any part of your solid surface such as your driveway, parking lot, or any other solid surface we lower the dumpster onto.
The best part about all of this is the fact that you do not have to be there for any part of it. Our dumpster rental process allows us to drop off a roll off container to you without the need for you to be present. Let us know where you’d like your next roll off container to be placed!

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Dumpster For a Day?

Can I get a discount if I only need to rent the dumpster for one day?

Generally, no. Whether you need a temporary dumpster for one day, three days, or seven days typically doesn’t impact the price of the rental. A majority of dumpster rental services automatically include a standard rental length of “up to a week” at the same cost.

Why aren’t discounts generally available for a one day rental?

The cost to the dumpster service of delivering the dumpster, picking it up, and dumping it are the same regardless of whether the dumpster is rented for a single day or several days.

Do any dumpster companies offer a price reduction for very short term rentals?

Some companies may negotiate a slightly lower rate for a very short rental period, like one to three days, especially during very busy times. If a company is experiencing a high volume of business and their inventory is low, they may be more motivated to provide a discounted price for a fast return of the dumpster. Likewise, smaller dumpster companies with smaller fleets might also be more inclined to offer a better rate for the ability to get the dumpster back and rented out again more quickly.  Companies that have a large inventory of dumpsters in their yard ready to rent typically are not motivated to provide a discount for a short-term rental.

So how much does it cost to rent a dumpster for a day or two?

To better get an idea of the cost of a 10 yard or 20 yard dumpster in your area, contact us at Waste Solutions 123 and speak with one of our sales agents. Our usual prices include more than a day’s rental, but we will do our best to get you a lower cost on your short term roll off container.

How Big of a Dumpster Do I Need?

Do I need a big dumpster?

So, the DIY bug bit you again and you can’t help but scratch that itch. You know that once the job is done, you’re going to be left with a mess, so you’re looking to rent a dumpster to handle cleanup. But how big a dumpster do you need? Let us break it down for you.

How Much Does Each Dumpster Size Hold?

Dumpster dimensions are expressed in cubic yards. This refers to the volume of debris they can hold. The exact sizes available for rent may vary depending on your location and the company you rent from, but you’ll likely be choosing from among these sizes:
  • 10 cubic yard dumpster: Typically holds about 3 pickup trucks’ worth of debris.
  • 15 cubic yard dumpster: Typically holds about 4-5 pickup trucks’ worth of debris.
  • 20 cubic yard dumpster: Typically holds 6 pickup trucks’ worth of debris.
  • 30 cubic yard dumpster: Typically holds about 9 pickup trucks’ worth of debris.
  • 40 cubic yard dumpster: Typically holds about 12 pickup trucks’ worth of debris.
Now that you have a general idea of the most common dumpster dimensions, we’ll break things down into which dumpster sizes work best for various common projects.

How Big of a Dumpster Do I Need for a Garage, Attic or Basement Clean out?

Unless you have a real mountain of junk to remove all at once, a 10 yard or 15 yard dumpster should do the trick. Boxes of odds-and-ends, household items, clothing, bedding and more can all be tossed straight into a 10 or 15 yard dumpster and hauled away painlessly.

What About a Whole-House Clean out?

For a clean out of this magnitude, your best bet is a 15 yard or 20 yard dumpster. These dumpsters have the dimensions to handle large quantities of household junk, from the big stuff like furniture to the small knick-knacks. However, if you’re cleaning out a very large house, you might want to opt for a 30 yard.

How Big of a Dumpster Do I Need to Remodel a Room?

The right dumpster dimensions to handle a remodeling project depend heavily on the exact type of project you’re taking on. Tearing up your flooring? Taking down a wall? Installing new windows? In general, when you’re remodeling a single room, a 20 yard dumpster will be able to handle all the debris you’re left with.
Note: if you’re remodeling a kitchen where you’ll have lots of large items to remove (cabinets, appliances, countertops, etc.), you may need to move up a size and go with a 30 yard dumpster.

What if I’m Remodeling Multiple Rooms?

If you’re tackling a multi-room remodel, the best dumpster for the job is likely either a 20 yard or 30 yard container. Which one you choose will depend on the size of the rooms and what type of project you’re planning in each. If you’re doing just one project in each—say removing the current flooring—a 20 yarder is probably your best bet. If you’re planning multiple projects for each room, then a 30 yard is likely what you’ll need to hold all the debris.

How Big of a Dumpster Do I Need for a Construction Project?

Generally, the best choice for a construction job will be a 30 yard or 40 yard container. Each of these sizes can be used to quickly haul away lumber, drywall, siding and any other waste generated by your project. Keep in mind that if you’re planning a major project, like building an entirely new structure, you may need to rent more than one of whichever size you choose.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need for a Demolition Project?

Few projects will leave you with more debris than a demolition project. To handle cleanup efficiently, you’ll need the largest dumpster dimensions commonly available: a 30 yard or 40 yard dumpster. However, if your demolition project involves concrete, brick or other such heavy debris, you may need to rent a dumpster specifically earmarked for heavy materials. This is because, in order to haul them safely, these materials must often be transported in smaller quantities.

How Big of a Dumpster Do I Need for a Landscaping Job?

Unless you’re planning something extremely ambitious, landscaping projects generally leave a smaller amount of debris than other projects. A 10 yard dumpster or 15 yard dumpster is probably just the ticket to make cleanup simple. If your landscaping project involves building or removing a deck or patio, you might need to up your dumpster dimensions to a 20 yard.
Need more information? Call us at Waste Solutions 123, our staff can help you with whatever questions you may have! Ready to rent? We can help you find the right dumpster rental sizes for your home remodel, landscaping, construction or demolition project.

  • Dimensions: 3 feet high x 6 feet long x 3 feet wide
  • Capacity: Can hold about 15 trash bags
  • Weight Limit: Typically can store 400 pounds
2 yard dumpsters can also be used at small apartment complexes and convenience stores. Apartment complexes with 6 family units or less can get by with a smaller dumpster, but larger complexes will require either a 4 or 6 yard dumpster. As for convenience stores, a 2 yard dumpster should fit.

4 Yard Weekly Service

Dumpster styles are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the container manufacturer.
A 4 yard dumpster works well for small retailers, offices with up to 100 employees, medical clinics, and mid size restaurants.
  • Dimensions: 5 feet high x 6 feet long x 4.2 feet wide
  • Capacity: Can hold up to two pickup trucks- worth of trash
  • Weight limit: Typically between 800-1000 pounds
4 yard dumpsters hold double the amount but are still a convenient enough size that doesn’t sacrifice space. They are just as easy to load as a 2 yard dumpster and can easily fit in a small parking lot or in the back of a commercial building.

6 Yard Weekly Service

Dumpster styles are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the container manufacturer.
A 6 yard dumpster is what you would commonly find behind commercial buildings such as a shopping plaza or large offices with up to 250 employees, it is a great dumpster for apartments, grocery stores and more.
  • Dimensions: 6 feet high x 6 feet long x 5 feet wide
  • Capacity: Can hold about 50 trash bags
  • Weight limit: Easily holds about 1200-1400 pounds
These bins also feature a sliding door so you don’t have to lift any trash bags over your head. The sliding door allows easy access. These dumpsters typically are cleaned out 1-2 times a week depending on the amount of waste accumulated throughout the week.

8 Yard Weekly Service

Dumpster styles are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the container manufacturer.
The 8 yard dumpster is the largest of the permanent use dumpsters, and typically are seen behind warehouses and offices with up to 500 employees.
